Volkswagen Group and Self-Driving Company, Aurora Innovation, Announce Joint Project 


The Volkswagen Group and Aurora Innovation will work together to bring self-driving cars to roads worldwide safely, quickly and broadly. Aurora will assist the Volkswagen Group in carrying out their future vision, called 'Mobility for all, at the push of a button.' A Predicted Global Leader


Through the Volkswagen Group's "TOGETHER - Strategy 2015," the company has planned to become an autonomous driving global leader. This mission builds of the Volkswagen Group's long tradition to lead in the automated vehicle and advanced mobility technology fields. They have long been on this way do this, as at the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, the winner was a Volkswagen Electronics Research Lab-Stanford University team.

The Volkswagen Group is working on cars that are easy to driver for one's daily commutes in cities. These cars consist of different types of vehicles across the Group brands and various product categories. One example of this is the SEDRIC, a fully self-driving Volkswagen concept introduced in 2017. Going back to the Stanford University, the University's Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab (VAIL) on campus and the Volkswagen Group have worked with Aurora experts to integrate Aurora's self-driving system, including hardware, software and sensors. All this technology development has the customer experience at its center.


About Aurora Innovation

Aurora Innovation is based in Palo Alto, CA and Pittsburgh, PA. The company designs and builds self-driving technology, partnering with automobile makers to advance self-driving platforms into cars.  Three people--Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chris Ursom, Chief Product Officer (CPO) Sterling Anderson and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Drew Bagnell--founded Aurora. According to the CEO, "Our priority at Aurora is to make self-driving cars a reality quickly, broadly and safely, and we know we will get there faster by partnering with innovative automakers like the Volkswagen Group. This partnership establishes a deep collaboration using Aurora's self-driving technology, and together we will bring self-driving vehicles to market at scale."
