2018 Volkswagen Passat vs 2018 Hyundai Sonata near Palm Springs, CA

When looking for the perfect sedan you can be overwhelmed by the number of options out there. The seemingly endless amount of sedans in the market may seem like an impossible task to comb through, but the 2018 Volkswagen Passat and the 2018 Hyundai Sonata manage to stand out from the crowd and give you unique options to consider. However, your next question is which one of these sedans is the better one. To start, the 2018 Passat has added many new features and options to the 2018 model year. Some of these additions include a four-cylinder engine that has been upgraded for better fuel efficiency and power, a brand new GT trim level that includes a V6 engine, and optional driver aids (automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring) that can now be added to the base models! On the other side of things, the 2018 Sonata has had a complete restyle, which doesn't bode well for previous models. The Sonata also includes a few new safety features as standard, and it upgrades the headlights to LED. You'll also find that the 2.0T trim has a new automatic transmission that has replaced the old six-speed. The 2018 Volkswagen Passat starts off strong by keeping its unique exterior and upgrading its four-cylinder engine to make it even more fuel-efficient than ever!

2018 Volkswagen Passat Power & Handling

Two powerful engine options are offered with the 2018 Volkswagen Passat. The first engine is the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 which creates 184 pound-feet of torque and 174 horsepower. You'll find this engine paired with a smooth six-speed automatic transmission. If you're looking for a fuel-efficient engine, then you're in luck. This 2.0-liter engine can get you 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. The second engine that you can choose is the 3.6-liter V6 that produces 258 pound-feet of torque and 280 horsepower. This engine works with a dual-clutch automatic transmission that also comes with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The fuel economy with this V6 is 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Every 2018 Passat comes in front-wheel drive.

2018 Hyundai Sonata Power & Handling

The standard engine in the 2018 Sonata is a 2.4-liter inline-4 that creates 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. The next engine available is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4, producing 260 pound-feet of torque and 245 horsepower. The final option is a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-4 that is rated up to 195 pound-feet of torque and 178 horsepower. The first two engines come with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the last engine option is only offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It should be noted that there is no V6 engine option, which is slightly disappointing when it comes to the amount of power that the Sonata is capable of.

2018 Volkswagen Passat Features & Design

Six unique trim levels come with the Passat. The first of these is the Passat S, which adds an auxiliary audio jack, one USB port, a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, a 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, 60/40-split folding rear seats, a power-adjustable driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, automatic headlights, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Passat R-Line comes with unique R-Line styling elements, MirrorLink, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, HD and satellite radio, a 6.3-inch touchscreen, simulated leather upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated side mirrors, and 19-inch alloy wheels. The higher offering, the Passat SEL Premium, adds a lane departure warning system, an automated parallel-parking feature, a separate ski pass-through for the 60/40-split rear seats, a premium Fender audio system, automatic wipers, leather upholstery, driver-seat memory settings, a power-adjustable passenger seat, and power-folding mirrors.

2018 Hyundai Sonata Features & Design

The 2018 Sonata comes with seven trim levels. The first is the Sonata SE which comes with cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, power-folding front mirrors, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, automatic headlights, a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, a six-speaker sound system, and power windows and door locks. The Sonata Sport adds a Sport-specific interior trim, leather sport seats with cloth inserts, a flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, a chrome-tipped dual exhaust, chrome rocker panels, rear diffuser, a front grille, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The Sonata Limited comes with woodgrain appearance trim, dual climate control, front-seat ventilation, driver-seat memory settings, a six-way power passenger seat, full leather seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and LED headlights. If you want further upgrades you'll have to check out the different package options that are an additional cost.

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat gives you a unique looking vehicle with powerful engine options and plenty of trim level options. The Hyundai Sonata has many highlights, but the fact of the matter is, the Sonata lacks the power options that the Passat contains. The Sonata does not have a V6 engine configuration and forces you to obtain package options if you're looking for the higher end features.
